speaking to Hazem, I could often feel the isolation and loneliness he felt in his new town. He told me; ‘Germany is full of refugees, I can travel but I cant move out. The organisations are not really that useful but I know they try. Its just hard and I have few friends. It can sometimes feel quite lonely’

I remodeled Hazems home after the crisis based on images he sent me. Pictured is what was left of his home after it it was destroyed and subsequently abandoned, centered in an equally isolated landscape.

Can we imagine the affect losing our homes would have on us, coupled with the loneliness and seclusion we would then feel in our new home towns?

After speaking to Hazem, I wanted to portray the isolation he often felt especially now that he has moved to Germany.

Using photographs sent by Hazem, I was able to remodel his home post crisis. His home has now become an abandoned piece of architecture, left behind in Syria.

To the left is Hazems home in Syria post crisis. This image, although shocking, represents so many homes abandoned in the crisis.

Hazems' home - Remodelled

Once the house had been modeled, I created a isolated and desolate world for it to be placed within.

The image itself can be seen to represent Hazems own feelings towards his old home, as well as his new home. In turn, blurring the lines between fiction and his reality.

The image was posted to Instagram to gauge public reaction and raise awareness on the issue. It seems to have had had an emotive affect on my followers based on the likes and comment; showing the empathy people feel in relation to Hazems loneliness.

Where you live is a huge part of your story, and for hazem, that chapter ended when he was forced to abandon his home in Syria. After sending me images of his home post crisis, I realised the striking resemblance between his home and my own.

On the left I have modelled my own home and on the right is hazems home. Once together, we not only see our differences, but the similarities we all share with each other.

Hazems' home and My Home - modelled

Where you live is a huge part of your story and I found that my home in Manchester resembled Hazems home greatly. Merging the two worlds shows us not only how different we are, but also how similar.
